As part of their ‘Clean up the town’ initiative, members of AfriForum Benoni arranged a working party to address maintenance issues and other needs in the CBD and Western Extension.
On October 18, a working party was arranged and the team of AfriForum volunteers spent the day at the Pauline Davis Home for the Aged in the CBD doing some much-needed maintenance.

“Forty-five globes were replaced, two LED light fittings were changed and one floodlight was repaired and the globe changed,” said AfriForum Benoni deputy chair Ettiene de Klerk.
“A 28m flat wrap razor wire was fitted on the wall to try to deter and prevent criminals who have been consistently climbing over the wall and stealing the elderly people’s clothes from their washing lines.
“The team then paid a visit to the Deneys Conradie Residentia Home for the Aged on October 19 where once again some much-needed maintenance was undertaken.
“Broken globes were replaced, broken light fittings were repaired or replaced and the veld next to the old age home was cleaned up.
“The work party ended with boerewors rolls being made and distributed to anyone that was hungry.
“At first sight, the maintenance seen to be undertaken may seem trivial to those of us who take working light fittings and safe perimeters for granted, but the situation of many of these elderly folk is dire and the work done by the team was well received by the residents.”
“These events were a great success and the AfriForum team was warmly received with much gratitude expressed from the residents of both old age homes, for the care and attention paid to them,” said Dean Ambrose (AfriForum Benoni environmental affairs).
The team ended their morning off by cleaning the streets in Western Extension and removing illegal advertising boards.
